See dramatic clouds streak across Saturn’s moon Titan See Cassini’s last image before it died at Saturn 4 Tags So far, Wellons is doing a good job of selling us on Titan, but the moon isn’t exactly a body double for Maui. It’s chilly to the tune of -290 degrees Fahrenheit (-179 degrees Celsius). NASA says you could walk around on Titan without a spacesuit, but you’d need an oxygen mask and protection from the cold.So Titan has some downsides, but it’s worth tossing it into the speculation hopper as we contemplate colonizing the solar system some day. I have to agree with Wellons when she says “it just seems like an awesome place to live.” 13 Photos Share your voice Cassini at Saturn Sci-Tech Enlarge ImageTitan poses in front of Saturn in this mosaic image from the Cassini mission. I know which one I’d choose.NASA’s Janelle Wellons is pumping up Saturn’s moon Titan as a possible site of human settlement should Earth become uninhabitable. Wellons is an instrument operations engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. She participated in a Reddit Q&A on Wednesday with women who work at NASA.Enlarge ImageTitan has a hazy atmosphere, which makes the surface difficult to see. Cassini’s near-infrared spectrometer penetrated the clouds to give us a look at its surface. NASA/JPL/University of Arizona/University of Idaho A Reddit user asked, “Where would the most suitable place in the universe be to go if we couldn’t theoretically live on Earth anymore?”Wellons suggests Titan, calling it a more interesting answer than the standard Mars or moon response. Wellons used to work as an engineer on NASA’s Cassini mission, which is now over. The spacecraft spent years studying the ringed planet and its many satellites, including weird and fascinating Titan, Saturn’s largest moon.NASA chief scientist Jim Green had previously floated Titan as a possible option for colonization.”Titan is the only place besides Earth known to have liquids in the form of lakes and seas on its surface,” Wellons says. “These liquids are made of methane but, armed with the right kind of protective gear, one could theoretically be able to swim without harm!”Titan isn’t just a potential swimming spot, it also has a draw for anybody who’s ever taken flight in a dream. Wellons points to the thick atmosphere and its ability to shield us from space radiation. “It is so dense that we could actually attach wings to our arms and fly on this moon,” she says. Hell yeah. Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad. ReutersMalaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad said Wednesday he wants to develop an island on a cluster of rocks previously disputed with Singapore, a move that could anger its neighbour. The strategically located area has long been a flashpoint between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, and they previously took a territorial dispute to the United Nations top court. The International Court of Justice in 2008 awarded two rock clusters, called Middle Rocks, to Malaysia while a nearby island was deemed to be Singaporean territory.Malaysia launched a challenge to that ruling last year but Singapore’s foreign ministry said Wednesday it had been withdrawn by Kuala Lumpur. However, at the same time Mahathir announced Malaysia wanted to develop an island on Middle Rocks, at the eastern entrance of the strategic Singapore Strait. The 100-kilometre (60-mile) strait is one of the world’s busiest commercial shipping routes, with vessels using it to access the city-state’s port.“It is our intention to enlarge Middle Rocks into a small island for us,” the 92-year-old-who started his second stint as premier this month after a surprise election win-told a press conference. He gave no more details about what the proposed island would look like or how long it would take to build.Mahathir added that Malaysia had already built a structure on Middle Rocks. Reports said Malaysia inaugurated a maritime base there last year.James Chin, a Malaysia expert from the University of Tasmania, told AFP that Singapore would see the move as “hostile”.“Among the Singapore elite, they will see it as part of Mahathir’s anti-Singapore stance,” he said.It came after Mahathir announced this week that he was scrapping a planned high-speed railway between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, as he seeks to improve the nation’s finances. Both developments are likely to alarm the Singapore government, already wary of Mahathir’s return as ties between the neighbours were famously stormy during his first stint as premier from 1981-2003.Still, Kuala Lumpur’s decision to drop its case at the ICJ could assuage fears.Malaysia had lodged its challenge in February 2017, calling for the court to overturn its earlier ruling granting its neighbour sovereignty over the disputed island.
Santana seems to have given Delhi a taste for rock for sure. And now Delhiites will get a chance to listen to Five 8 — a glam / Progressive Rock band from the city. The band has Robin Mathew on vocals, Aveleon Vaz on drums, Pranav on guitars, Steve Peter on bass and Shiv Ahuja on keyboards. Millennium Post caught up with the band members before their performance. Here are excerpts from an interview:How did all of you get together? We were all a part of the Kirori Mal College Music Society where the band was initially formed in 2005. But it was only in 2007 that we started playing our own music in the Delhi University circuit. After graduating, we started doing gigs in pubs. Our band was started with the idea of performing our own music and of course we also did a few covers. Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’How would you define your music?Essentially it is pop funk as a genre. Our music is all about feel good music. It is hip, happy, funky. Overall, it is about having a good time. What will you be performing today? E.P. and some of our new compositions. This time we have also roped in Pranav for guitars in place of our official guitarist, who is studying music in Chennai. What is the USP of your band? The fact that our sound is ever evolving. We keep innovating our songs and also rework our older numbers. Also Read – Leslie doing new comedy special with NetflixWhy Five 8?Actually, Five 8 is a musical term, a time signature. It was once during a competition that our drummer randomly played the Five 8 and we are kind of stuck with it ever since. It is just that we never decided to change it since.Who composes the music? Also what story does it tell? Most of our lyrics is written by Robin Mathew, our vocalist and the drummer Aveleon Vaz. But all of us contribute to the lyrics. Earlier, we wrote on everything under the sun. But over time, we started focusing on our surroundings and added critical commentary about the society. Tell us one thing your band is completely addicted to…Food. We draw our inspiration when we hang out together and food is one factor we cannot do without. When we jam we go to our drummer Aveleon’s house where his parents are quite supportive. He is a Goan and his mother cooks us a lot of Goan dishes. What next?More gigs. This time of the year is really busy so probably more gigs. Also as a band, we do not have high and lofty ideas of conquering the world music, but this is not to say we are not serious. We take music very seriously but for us it is all about having a quality time jamming and creating good music.
