Golf in 2010: SA’s sixth major winner

first_imgVery quickly, the golfing world learnt about the South African who goes by the nickname of “Shrek”, and he certainly won many fans with his smiling, humble demeanour. Addressing the media afterwards, Clark said: “Behind the majors this is the biggest tournament and the best field out there, and you’re always going to look at the history of the majors, but this is certainly … if there’s a number five this is it, but this is just a huge honour and everything that comes with it. Yeah, it’s a very proud day.” Lee-Ann PaceOn the Ladies European Tour, Lee-Anne Pace enjoyed a wonderful year and became the first South African to capture the Order of Merit. She also won the Players’ Player of the Year Award after receiving the most votes from her peers. Oosthuizen’s achievements were recognised by the Laureus World Sports Awards in December when he was named as a finalist for the World Breakthrough of the Year. He was the only South African to earn a nomination in any category. South African golfers provided many highlights in 2010, but none more than Louis Oosthuizen, who scored an extraordinary seven-shot victory in the British Open at Saint Andrews in July. At the end of March, Oosthuizen had secured his first European Tour victory in the Open de Andalucia de Golf in Malaga. It came only a week after he narrowly missed out on the Trophee Hassan II in Morocco. He had led heading into the final round, but ended up settling for second. By topping the Order of Merit, Pace earned herself a valuable 10-year Tour exemption. Just two weeks later, he was back in the winner’s circle after a two-shot victory in the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill. Asked how it felt to win two tournaments in a row, Els said: “It’s an amazing feeling, really. It can be one of the toughest games, cruellest games in the world, and then you sit here, it’s one of the nicest games. Sapa quoted the legendary Gary Player as saying: “I wish she was my daughter.” She won an astonishing five times, in the Deutsche Bank Ladies Swiss Open, the S4C Wales Ladies Championship of Europe, the Finnair Masters, the Sanya Ladies Open, and the Suzhou Taihu Ladies Open. In 2011, Schwartzel and Oosthuizen will contest the US PGA Tour. Ernie Els’ return to formMeanwhile, while Louis Oosthuizen enjoyed a career-best year, his mentor Ernie Els returned to the form that made him a long time world top-five-ranked golfer, and with that form came victories. In mid-March, he celebrated his first victory in two years when he conquered the Blue Monster and Doral to win the World Golf Championships-CA Championship by four shots from fellow South African Charl Schwartzel. Two-time winnerCharl Schwartzel, too, was a two-time winner. His victories were scored early in the year in South African-based European Tour events. By winning The Open, he joined Bobby Locke, Gary Player, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, and Trevor Immelman as South Africans who have had their names engraved on major trophies. The Big Easy wasn’t done winning yet and later in the year added the PGA Grand Slam of Golf at Royal Port in Bermuda to his long list of career titles. He had previously won it in 1997. For many years Clark had been a consistent performer on the US PGA Tour, but inexplicably had never broken through to win. It took him 206 tournaments to do so, but it was a thrilling and deserved victory went it finally arrived. In early January he claimed the African Open at the East London Golf Club with a 20-under-par total of 272. A week later he captured the Joburg Open by a sensational six shots after shooting a seven-under-par 64 in the third round and a five-under 66 over the last 18 holes. Tim Clark’s breakthroughFor many South African golf fans, one of the moments they most savoured in 2010 was the victory of Tim Clark in The Players Championship. It was his fifth European Tour win and the third of those that had been achieved in South Africa. Major winners 22 December 2010 “To win an Open Championship is special, but to win it here at Saint Andrews is something you dream about,” he said afterwards. But Elo isn’t the only statistical power rating out there; in fact, our NFL previews used predictions and rankings generated by ESPN’s new Football Power Index (FPI), a system of far greater complexity.1While Elo simply takes last year’s overall end-of-season ratings and regresses them to the mean, FPI adds some intricacies: It breaks a team’s quality down into components that measure its offense, defense and special teams, incorporates Vegas expectations, and employs subjective survey data from NFL experts. Since we plan to use both metrics in our NFL coverage throughout the season, we thought it would be interesting to look at how closely the two ratings mirror each other, as well as which teams fare better in each. (Note: To make an apples-to-apples comparison, I converted FPI to the same scale as Elo. I also updated the Elo-equivalent FPI ratings of New England and Pittsburgh to reflect Thursday night’s season-opening game.) 8Pittsburgh15528Baltimore1553 23St. Louis147723Minnesota1477 26Cleveland142226Chicago1444 28Oakland138928Washington1394 16San Francisco152916Buffalo1510 18Houston150518Detroit1501 30Washington137130Jacksonville1351 24Atlanta146224San Francisco1463 For the most part, Elo and FPI agree about the landscape of the league; the correlation coefficient between the two metrics is 0.94. Among the teams that FPI favors, on the other hand, are the Indianapolis Colts, New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers, Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons. It’s tough to pinpoint exactly why the discrepancies exist in many cases (so many factors go into the FPI’s construction, in particular), but they’re worth keeping an eye on as the season progresses. 21N.Y. Barcelona staff give players guard of honour

first_imgAfter Real Madrid’s refusal to give Barcelona the traditional guard of honour in respect for their recent La Liga title victory, the technical staff at the club rose to the occasion and applauded the players as they entered the pitch at the Nou CampPrior to Sunday’s “El Clasico”, Zinedine Zidane had announced that Real would not be giving their arch-rivals the guard of honour, after sealing the league title last weekend, due to the fact that Barcelona had failed to do the gesture themselves when the sides met at the Santiago Bernabeu in December after his side had won the FIFA Club World Cup.Despite the protests of both Barcelona and the Spanish press, Real remained firm on their decision and carried on with their pre-match preparations as normal. In light of this, Gerard Pique asked the technical staff to do the honour in Real’s place and so they applauded the team as they entered their home ground for the first time in front of their fans as Copa del Rey and La Liga champions. The coaching staff perform a guard of honor for the team ???? ???? Guardiola doesnt expect a more mature Benjamin Mendy

first_imgDuring a press conference this Tuesday, Pep Guardiola revealed that he doesn’t expect a more mature version of left-back Benjamin Mendy. In football there are players like Benjamin Mendy, who are different from the rest, they have a more jovial demeanor as they can’t seem to have an off switch and manager Pep Guardiola knew this when he first signed the Frenchman from AS Monaco.Ever since he got to Manchester City, this player has always shown a predilection for the more active way of life, the one that isn’t necessarily as private as perhaps the manager would like.Pep Guardiola has learned to separate the player from the public persona with Mandy and other players, but the Frenchman is the one who has given him a more challenging relationship. From the very start at Manchester City, Pep Guardiola repeatedly stated that he never really appreciated the social media life that his defender led, Mendy vowed to slow it down a bit but he never really did it.Now after a couple of years have passed, it appears that the Catalan manager has finally given up on his pursue to stop Mendy from being so public with his life and he has finally accepted the Frenchman for who he is.🗣 | Pep Guardiola: “Benjamin Mendy is in the squad tomorrow (against Burton). Maybe on the bench.”#FPL #FantasyPL #FFScout #GW24 #mcfc pic.twitter.com/6y3xXxq5NU— Fantasy Football Scout (@FFScout) January 22, 2019On Tuesday, when asked about this public persona that Benjamin Mendy has on all his social media accounts, Guardiola explained why he doesn’t have a problem with it anymore. The Catalan manager will be happy as long as the payer responds on training and on the pitch, he doesn’t care about the stuff outside work anymore.“I am delighted with Benjamin,” Guardiola told a news conference via Four Four Two.“I am sad because we were not able to play him because of injuries but that sometimes happens.”“The way he is training, the way he is in the locker room… you cannot imagine how much the people love him. I am delighted – I just want to use him more! That’s all.”“I am not unhappy with Mendy [using social media heavily]. I am not here to change his mentality. His way, the way he lives… is what it is. When we bought him, we knew it.”Harry Maguire, Manchester UnitedSolskjaer praises Harry Maguire after Man United’s 1-0 win Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Ole Gunnar Solskjaer singled out Harry Maguire for praise after helping Manchester United keep a clean sheet in their 1-0 win over Leicester City.“So, when we are talking about training sessions, always it’s perfect but he is active on social media. He likes to be. It is what it is.”“We try to convince him, but I’m not his father! [I tell him]: ‘Be focused on your job and what we have to do. You are young, and you can be one of the best left-backs, but it’s up to you,’” he added.Pep Guardiola: Benjamin Mendy ‘needs to be focused’ to achieve potential https://t.co/OYoao9X0Z6 pic.twitter.com/SsCpZHlnCg— Prem Brew (@prembrew) January 23, 2019After hearing Pep Guardiola speak frankly about Benjamin Mendy’s lifestyle, thinking about the poor way in which Jose Mourinho managed this with Paul Pogba at Manchester United is inevitable. The Portuguese manager truly hated this side of the French midfielder, they were always at odds for several reasons but one of the biggest disagreements they had was due to an Instagram story that Pogba posted after Manchester United was eliminated from the FC Cup by Derby County. We could see Paul laughing on a short video right after the Red Devils were eliminated in penalties, this was the origin of the already famous argument between the two of them on next morning’s training session after the infamous defeat.Pep Guardiola takes a very different approach to this with Benjamin Mendy, he prefers to understand his players instead of trying to limit him and this has brought a very peaceful relationship between the two.Even if Pep Guardiola doesn’ like the whole circus that is the social media lifestyle, he understands that times have changed and everybody has to adapt to the new era.‘I’m not his dad’ – Guardiola won’t change much-loved Mendy https://t.co/3P2ThhhBvl pic.twitter.com/KZXk9nDGia— Cleansheet (@Cleansheet) January 22, 2019What’s your take on players who love using social media for everything? first_imgNewsletter and trade magazine publisher Douglas Publications is suing distributor Baker & Taylor over magazines and directories the publisher says the company distributed on a credit basis but allegedly never paid for.The suit was filed late last year in North Carolina’s Mecklenburg County Superior Court. According to the complaint, Douglas Publications is seeking $53,541.20 in outstanding “goods and services.” The publications in question include Douglas’ Salesman’s Guide directories and Facility Care magazine.“We have attempted over the last several years to obtain payments but were unsuccessful,” Douglas Publications president Alan Douglas wrote in an e-mail to FOLIO:. “Baker & Taylor did not pay us and Castle Harlan Partners [a private equity group with controlling interest in Baker & Taylor] refused to respond. Silence isn’t always golden when vendor disputes drag on for years.” Baker & Taylor did not return a FOLIO: request for comment. In addition to Facility Care, Douglas publishes American Painting Contractor and Workplace HR & Safety magazines. Earlier this year Baker & Taylor—a global distributor of books, magazines, videos and music to libraries and retailers—announced that its chairman and CEO, Richard Willis, resigned in order to spend more time with his family.
