During her two-day visit in Providenciales, Chargé Johnson met with government and law enforcement officials, and hosted an open house at the U.S. Consular Agency office.On Monday, December 15, Chargé Johnson met with Governor of the Turks and Caicos Islands Peter Beckingham to discuss law enforcement and consular collaboration. She also met with Commissioner of Police for the Turks and Caicos Islands Colin Farquhar for talks that focused on law enforcement collaboration primarily through OPBAT (Operation Bahamas, Turks and Caicos). Established in 1983, OPBAT is a multi-agency, international drug interdiction effort focused on stopping the flow of illegal drugs from South America and the Caribbean to The Bahamas, the Turks and Caicos Islands and the United States. It is considered to be one of the most successful counter drug enforcement initiatives in the region.On Tuesday, December 16, Chargé Johnson hosted a Consular Open House at the U.S. Consular Agency located in Grace Bay in Providenciales. The event included guests from various areas of the government and civil society including the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force, Ministry of Health & Human Services, Providenciales Chamber of Commerce, and the Department of Disaster Management. Police Commissioner Colin Farquhar and Human Rights Commissioner Cheryl Astwood-Tull were in attendance.The U.S. Consular Agency in Providenciales processes passport applications and provides assistance to Americans who live and visit the Turks and Caicos Islands. According to the Turks and Caicos Tourism Board, over one million tourists visited the islands in 2013. The United States is the leading market for visitors with an estimated 79.7% of all stop-over arrivals. More than 3,000 American citizens are residents of the islands. Dame Products/Unbound Supporters, founders and employees of sex tech and women’s wellness startups like Dame Products and Unbound Babes assembled outside Facebook’s New York office Wednesday. The crowd protested the social media site’s policies, which don’t let the companies run ads for their products. Polly Rodriguez, CEO and co-founder of Unbound Babes, told CNET the event had a turnout of 40 to 50 founders, activists and educators. “Our goal was to raise awareness … and I feel pretty strongly we did just that,” Rodriguez said in an emailed statement. Tags Alexandra Fine, CEO and co-founder of Dame Products, added that the inability to advertise “created a great deal of drag on our mission.” “Advertising is a necessary and important part of connecting people to valuable solutions,” she said Wednesday. “There are millions of people who stand to improve their lives with our products, and they will have no idea we exist until we’re allowed to make contact with them. This doesn’t just impact a few businesses — it impacts the health and happiness of everyone who has sex.” The protests were along the lines of the Approved, Not Approved website that the two startups launched earlier this month. Approved, Not Approved is a game that lets you guess whether an advertisement was OK’d for public consumption. Dame Products / Unbound In June, Dame Products also sued the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority for rejecting its ads for vibrators. The sex tech protest isn’t the first protest Facebook’s New York office has seen. In June, dozens of anticensorship activists shed their clothes to protest the social media site’s nudity rules. In the wake of the protest, Facebook began talks with the activists over a compromise.The social media site appears to be taking the same approach this time. “We have had open lines of communication with both companies about our policies and are always taking feedback. We are working to further clarify our policies in this space in the near future,” a Facebook spokesperson said in an email. Facebook also pointed out its advertising policy that refers to adult products and services. The policy says ads can’t promote any adult products and services apart from family planning and contraception. In the case of contraceptives, the ad must focus on the “contraceptive features” of the product and not “sexual pleasure or sexual enhancement.” The ad also has to be targeted to users 18 years or older. Jet Airways grounded all flights on April 17.ReutersHopes of Jet Airways stakeholders to see the airline back on the skies have suffered yet another setback with a lender’s move to auction off the airline’s premium office property in Mumbai’s prestigious Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) to recover defaulted loan instalments of Rs 415 crore. The debt-riddled airline is already battling a host of financial, legal and regulatory hurdles in its attempt to resume operations. HDFC Bank is planning to sell the airline’s 52,775 sq ft office at an auction with a base price of Rs 245 crore.HDFC Bank said in a notice that the borrower (Jet Airways) has failed to repay amounts due to the bank, making it entitled to “enforce its mortgage over the immovable property”, a report in India Today says. Jet Airways had bought the land through an auction in 2008 for Rs 826 crore, a Livemint report said. The property is expected to attract heavy bidding because of its prime location.India’s first private airline, for which the banks led by the State Bank of India (SBI) has formed a rescue plan, has a total debt burden of about Rs 10,500 crore. It also owes upwards of Rs 2,500 crore in staff salary arrears and payments to vendors and service providers. Some service providers have threatened to haul the carrier through the bankruptcy proceedings. Industry observers are still unsure whether the airline could fly again, but its stakeholders hope there will be at least one serious bid before the deadline elapses on Friday. The SBI Capital Markets Limited, which manages the bids, has shortlisted four potential investors who have submitted their expressions of interest (EoI). Apart from the private carrier’s strategic partner the United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based Etihad Airways, two private equity firms, TPG Capital and Indigo Partners submitted their EoIs in time. State-owned National Investment and Industrial Fund (NIIF) has also been shortlisted. Abu Dhabi-based Etihad holds a 14 per cent stake in the airline. Unsworth set up Atmosphere Intercontinental Airlines in 2005 and has shown repeated interest to take over Jet since its collapse.Meanwhile, Mint reported that the registrar of companies (RoC) has submitted a report to the Corporate Affairs Ministry after examining the airline’s books. The RoC began examining the airline’s books after it deferred its first-quarter report for the last financial year (2018-19). The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is sniffing around Jet Airways accounts to ascertain whether any norms were violated in Etihad investment in Jet Privilege Pvt Ltd (JPPL), the company that runs the airline’s frequent flier programme, a report in Business Standard says. The deal with the Abu Dhabi-based carrier was concluded in 2014, an ED source said. Etihad owns a 50.1 per cent stake in JPPL, while Jet Airways holds 49.9 per cent.

(PhysOrg.com) — Australian scientists have invented software that enables mobile (cell) phones to work in remote areas where there is no conventional coverage and in locations where the infrastructure has been destroyed through disaster, or is not economically viable. The technology enables ordinary mobile phones to make and receive calls without the need for phone towers or satellites. Director of the Research Centre for Disaster Resilience and Health at Flinders University, Professor Paul Arbon said the systems could prove invaluable in disasters, providing an instant network allowing people to call out and receive calls from concerned relatives, and helping volunteers to coordinate the response. The system could also provide the community with updates and warnings. The systems have been successfully tested in remote areas of the Flinders Ranges in South Australia where there is no mobile phone reception, with the three researchers creating a network over one square kilometer. The next stages in the project are to increase the range and improve sound quality. The team is also working on developing a method of dropping the temporary towers into disaster areas.Dr Gardner-Stephen said the system could be operational within 18 months provided the project receives adequate funding. He said his dream was for every mobile phone to be equipped with the system so that if there is a disaster all the phones in the region will automatically switch to the mesh network mode of operation as a fallback. The aim is to “provide fast, cheap, robust and effective telecommunications systems” for areas where there is currently no telephone infrastructure, or where it has been destroyed by natural disasters or civil unrest. The project includes two systems that can operate separately or be combined. One is specifically for disaster areas, and consists of a temporary, self-organizing and self-powered mobile phone network that operates via small phone towers dropped into the area by aircraft. The second system consists of a permanent mesh-based phone network between Wi-Fi enabled mobile phones, with no tower infrastructure required. Eventually, the system will also include the “Batphone,” which will be a specially designed phone able to operate on other unlicensed frequencies.The systems use open-source software developed by the team and dubbed Distributed Numbering Architecture (DNA). The software allows mobile phones to make calls out and receive calls on their existing numbers. The mesh network technology was developed by Village Telco and is integrated with the software to create a mesh network in which each phone acts as an independent router.Dr Gardner-Stephen said the device essentially “incorporates a compact version of a mobile phone tower into the phone itself.” It uses the Wi-Fi interface in modern Wi-Fi-enabled phones, carrying voice over it in such a way that it does not need to go back to a tower anywhere. The current range between phones is only a few hundred meters, which limits the usefulness of the system in remote areas, but Gardner-Stephen said adding small transmitters and more devices could expand the range considerably. The real benefit of the current system would be in disaster areas where there are plenty of phones but the towers are destroyed or the infrastructure is no longer functioning. In the recent Haiti disaster area for example, the mobile phone network was knocked out for over two days after the earthquake struck, and did not return to normal operation for a week.
