Photo by Sharon EllmanThe TCU women’s rifle team opened the season with the highest score in the NCAA this season, helping them to defeat the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) at home.The Frogs fired an air rifle score of 2,381, the fourth-highest score in program history, along with a smallbore score of 2,327. Senior Rachel Garner tied for the fourth-best mark in TCU history with her air rifle score of 599. Her score was one point shy of a perfect score and a career high for the senior. Junior Casey Lutz followed Garner with a 597 in air rifle. Sophomore Elizabeth Marsh and first-year Kristen Hemphill rounded out the top four overall scores with scores of 594 and 591.Garner also led the field in smallbore with her mark of 587. Marsh and Hemphill fired a 582 and 580, respectively, to follow Garner’s lead in the smallbore and Lutz shot a 578 to round out the team score of 2,327.TCU turned in the top four aggregate scorers with Garner’s mark of 1,186 leading the way. Hemphill finished fourth in her first collegiate match with a mark of 1,171. The Horned Frogs will travel to Navy Saturday for their next meet.
