Toure wants to make history

first_imgYaya Toure is determined to keep Manchester City powering on towards title glory. Press Association Toure set up the win by scoring the first two goals from the penalty spot and then curling home a sublime third at the Etihad Stadium. Fernandinho and Martin Demichelis added gloss to the scoreline late on. Toure, the former Barcelona midfielder who also scored a brilliant goal to help win the Capital One Cup earlier this month, told City TV: “I came to the club to make history and I hope to continue to the end of my contract. “I think the club and the fans need trophies, need history and need great players to come here and try to make this club great. “We have the team, we have the players, we have the manager as well. “I hope at the end of the season we lift this trophy for these fans who love City.” Toure’s treble took his tally for the season to 20. He is the third City player to reach that landmark this season after Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo while Edin Dzeko, who missed the game through sickness, has 18. The Ivory Coast international attributes his fine goalscoring form this season to the confidence placed in his offensive ability by attack-minded manager Pellegrini. The 30-year-old said: “He gave me more freedom up front, he gave me more confidence to attack more. Toure, City’s midfield talisman, scored a hat-trick in Saturday’s convincing 5-0 win over 10-man, relegation-threatened Fulham. The victory lifted Manuel Pellegrini’s side to third in the Barclays Premier League, six points behind leaders Chelsea with three games in hand. “When you play full attack you can leave some space and it is very hard because when we win it is fine, but when we lose we get some criticism by some people who think they understand football more. “But that is part of the job, that is why we love football. We are very happy to score five goals in front of the fans and I hope we will continue to the end.” City were not at their best but were still far too strong for Fulham. They went ahead after Fernando Amorebieta kicked Negredo in the backside to concede, perhaps harshly, a penalty after 26 minutes. But there was no contesting Amorebieta’s second indiscretion as he felled David Silva early in the second half to give away another spot-kick and earn a red card. Toure sent goalkeeper David Stockdale the wrong way for a second time and City then cruised to victory. City have 10 league games remaining and their title credentials will be tested in two away games at Manchester United and Arsenal in the coming week. Goalkeeper Joe Hart is confident City have the belief and ability to achieve their aim. The England international said: “The fans, players, and staff – everyone needs to pull each other through if we want to get over the line first. “I do think we have the squad to win the league. We can’t get too wrapped up in the away games we still have to play. “We still have the chance to do something really special and do something this club hasn’t done for 44 years by winning two trophies in one season. “So we need to press on and try and create a bit of history.” Hart has now re-established himself as Pellegrini’s first-choice goalkeeper after a series of mistakes led to a spell out of the side earlier in the season. Yet he feels he has to constantly keep working to maintain his position and accepts Costel Pantilimon, who played the League Cup final, will also get opportunities. Hart said: “I don’t feel it’s a case of that side of things being really solved. “I’m still training hard – as I would be whether I was in or out of the team – and I’m always working to improve my game. “I don’t want it to seem as though everything is fine or that it was part of my life that I will forget, because I’m still living it and I am trying to live in the moment more recently. “The past is the past and we don’t know what lies ahead in the future so it’s better to live day by day. “We are going to get some wonderful opportunities at this club – some I will be playing in, some that I won’t – and I’m just trying to look at things the best I can.” last_img read more

CONCACAF Gold Cup: T&T face uphill task after going down to Suriname 2-1

first_imgPORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – Trinidad and Tobago were left with an uphill task of reaching the CONCACAF Gold Cup after slumping to a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Suriname, in the opening game of the Caribbean Football Union qualifying series here Wednesday night.Following a goalless first half at the Ato Boldon Stadium, the hosts fell behind in the 76th minute through a Guno Kwasie strike but equalised five minutes later thanks to a Tyrone Charles bombshell. With all to play for in added extra time, Ivanildo Rozenblad netted in the first period to break Trinidad’s hearts, and leave their qualification hanging by a thread.“We knew it would not have been an easy game. In football there are no easy games,” head coach Tom Saintfiet told a post-game media conference.“I think for the first 70 minutes we played in a good organisation and could create a lot of opportunities from there. If you count the amount of corners we had and the danger we create out of these corners, it was quite a lot. The only problem is we didn’t score out of these chances.”T&T suffered a blow prior to kick off when striker Cornell Glen was injured during warm-up and ruled out of the contest. However, the hosts had the better of the exchanges in the first half but failed to really seriously threaten the Suriname goal.Akeem Roach, in for the injured Glen, produced a long-range shot in the 30th minute but this was easily handled low down by goalkeeper Claidel Kohinor. On the stroke of halftime, Roach sprayed a pass to Nathan Lewis on the right wing just outside the 18-yard box, and he picked out Hashim Arcia who failed to control the ball in a dangerous position just in front of goal.Against the run of play, T&T almost conceded just seconds before halftime when 19-year-old Sorencio Juliaans forced a diving save out of goalkeeper Adrian Foncette.Charles and Hughtu Hector then came close to opening the scoring but it was Suriname who poked their noses in front through Kwasie’s deflected effort, from just outside the 18-yard box.T&T were back level in the 81st minute, however, when Charles produced a brilliant curling free kick from 25 yards out to leave Kohinor with absolutely no chance. The equalising goal injected new fervour into T&T’s game but they failed to come up with the winner inside the 90 minutes. In added time, Suriname found the killer blow in the 109th minute when 71st minute substitute Rozenblad got free from his marker, pivoted five yards outside the box and fired a long range, right-footed volley which beat Foncette all ends up.T&T clash with French Caribbean side Haiti in the final game of the series on Sunday at the same venue. The winner of the qualifying series will face the fifth-placed side from Central America in another playoff which will determine the final place at this July’s CONCACAF Gold Cup in United States.last_img read more

NFL: Antonio Brown could be in ‘breach of contract’ if he won’t play in new helmet

first_imgAntonio Brown likely won’t get anywhere with the NFL when it comes to playing in his old helmet. The Raiders receiver reportedly said “he would hold the league liable” if he were injured while playing in a new helmet, adding that he wants to continue to play in his old one. While the NFL didn’t mention Brown by name, Brown is the only one to have threatened to not play because of the helmet requirement. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady also has issues with the new helmet, but said on WEEI Radio that he doesn’t “have much of a choice” except to wear it.”You get used to the same helmet for a long period of time. My last helmet, I wore it the last four Super Bowls, so it was a pretty great helmet for me. I hated to put it on the shelf,” he said. “It’s kind of what I’m dealing with.”The Schutt Air Advantage helmet, which is what Brown wants to wear, was discontinued in 2011 and is 12 years old. In addition to NOCSAE certification, the NFL doesn’t approve of helmets older than 10 years, according to CBS Sports. However, the helmet Brown is used to playing in has been deemed outdated by the league. Even though Brown reportedly said he won’t play unless he can use the old helmet, the NFL is standing firm in having all players use new helmets and said any player who doesn’t play or practice because of this issue could be breaching his contract.”The player can’t practice or play in games with equipment that’s not approved,” NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy said in a statement. “If he doesn’t play or practice he is in breach of his contract and doesn’t get paid.” Related News Tom Brady: Don’t read anything into Boston-area home being for sale Antonio Brown threatens to hold NFL liable if he’s injured wearing new helmet, report says McCarthy added that NFL policy is that helmets have to be certified by the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment and that the organization doesn’t certify equipment that is more than 10 years old.The player can’t practice or play in games with equipment that’s not approved. The Opinionated Spectator…Preseason Relevance

first_imgPittsburgh Steelers’ Ben Roethlisberger fumbles the ball during the first half of an NFL preseason football game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014, in Philadelphia. (AP Photo/Matt Rourke)Don’t you remember when the Steelers were relevant? The Steelers were an absolute force to be reckoned with. And the preseason was fun.The starters would come out onto the field, flex their muscles, score their points, and scare their opponents. The preseason was a taste of the ultimate beat down that the Steelers were going to reign on their opponents in the regular season. It was delicious.Although it was the preseason, the first half of the game was must-see television. It was our own black and gold version of the hunger games. On Thursday, August 21, 2014, the Steelers lost to Philadelphia Eagles by a score of 31-21 and it wasn’t as close as the score indicates. What happened to my delicious appetizer? There is only one word to describe last night’s performance. ABYSMALAlexis CobbIn terms of the Steelers’ records, this loss means nothing. Zilch. They don’t get penalized for it in the regular season. However, let’s look at this game with our postseason relevancy lenses.First and foremost, just when the players were gaining confidence from last week’s win against the Buffalo Bills, the players are back to square one. Rather than having to answer questions pertaining to hope and cautious optimism about the team’s future, the veterans must answer questions on losing and the possibility of another postseason absence.During training camp, Mike Tomlin stated, “We step into stadiums with one goal in mind and that is to win.”He is right. That has been the goal. Unfortunately, winning has not been the final product. And after watching Thursday’s game, winning was never an option. At halftime, the starters were losing by 17-0 and the fans were hoping that the Steelers would score to avoid a blowout. While many people don’t put much stock in the preseason, these preseason losses have been symptomatic of the Steelers regular season and subsequent lack of playoff appearances. In the 2013 season, the Steelers lost all four preseason games. You think that wasn’t indicative of their actual season? It was. The Steelers started the year with 4 consecutive losses, a bye week and finally managed to beat the NY Jets, which frankly, was nothing to be proud of. Their regular season record was 8-8 and the Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t make the postseason. Also, in the 2012 season, the Steelers once again lost several preseason games and went on to finish the year at 8-8.  They didn’t make the playoffs that year either. The last time the Steelers qualified to play in the postseason was in 2011. They played against the Denver Broncos and their starting quarterback was Tim Tebow. Tebow singlehandedly beat the Steelers in overtime.Think about those chilling facts, ladies and gentlemen. The Steelers have been irrelevant for so long that we have to recall when Tim Tebow started for an NFL team to dredge up memories of the Steelers most recent playoff history. That’s unacceptable. The Steelers need to fix their offensive and defensive problems so they can have a fighting chance at having a successful year and making the playoffs this year. They don’t need to be somewhere biting their nails hoping another team loses so they can snag a wildcard spot. Many of the Pittsburgh Steeler’s training camp practices have open to the public and the Pittsburgh Steelers fans are famished for some quality football. They cheer for the slightest improvement. They desperately want their team to be relevant again.Pittsburgh fans think they are entitled to greatness on the football field because they have six championships and a history of prolonged success and relevance. So while some people may think, hey it’s just a preseason game. No Big Deal. They are wrong.  These games mean something. They give the players a chance to build their confidence. They give teams a chance to build camaraderie. They are the stepping stones that help build the foundation for the upcoming season. And this season’s foundation seems shaky. REALLY REALLY Shaky. So, I’m asking the Steelers to pull themselves together. Do not be satisfied with being irrelevant and watching others become dominant. Shake off this foolishness, band together as a team and play some winning football.Alexis Sara Cobb may be reached at:  [email protected] or (724) 561-8082  Follow her on Twitter: @alexissaralast_img read more

Live Blog: How the Smart World Emerges

first_imgTop Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Related Posts Tags:#cloud#news alex williamscenter_img Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… We’re starting another day at IBM Pulse and today the discussion moves to how smart technologies are getting integrated into business and the world of smarter cities. We’ll look at this by exploring the meaning as it relates to virtualization and cloud computing. We will look at how these businesses are changing its systems to adjust as infrastructure gets older. How does that relate to the cloud?Let’s get started.8:22 a.m.:Companies now face data, connection and challenges in complexity. About 15 petabytes of new information is being generated every day. The connectivity is through a systems of systems. The city of Cambridge in Cambridge,Canada looked to make all of its infrastructure connected by integrating all of its roads and other physical points. 8:27 a.m.:Is security keeping pace with the data influx and connected systems? Discussing Wikileaks and what it represents in terms of internal security. And then there is Stuxnet. The Stuxnet malware gives insights into how complex things can be and how long it can be on a system. NASDAQ OMX was a virus that gained access to NASDAQ management infrastructure. Mobile and cloud are the big topics today. We are seeing the consumerization of security.8:41 a.m.: Security is becoming more about management. Automation provides the capability to manage the hundreds of thousands of end points.8:58 a.m.:We’re hearing from Washington, D.C.’s general manager for DC Water, who is cracking up the crowd. He is an incredibly passionate guy, a great advocate for cities everywhere to change their infrastructure.9:02 a.m.:ING executive is developing a platform-as-a-service with the ambition to deliver IT as a service. On the people side, there are training programs that are mandatory to do.Training covers virtualization and cloud computing. It’s a whole process integration.9:06 a.m.: One thing we see at IM Pulse is this whole concept of patterns. In smarter cities, the data from people’s homes tells city managers that there are problems that are coming up again and again. Those problems could not be seen before. With the data being analyzed, problems can be solved that need solving. The city managers become service providers.9:15 a.m.: Jamie Thomas of IBMis on stage. Here come the demos! Finally!9:17 a.m.: The airport is a complex place. It’s a system of systems. Wing To of IBM is doing a demo to show how integrated service management is managed in a cloud environment. Bowman Hall of IBM, Jim Fletcher and Robert Uthe are coming up to do the demo. The demo shows that before the integration, it was a fragmented network of systems. Today, the airport is managed through a control panel that shows the runways, operations, passenger and associated issues related to each. The demo shows how an existing IT infrastructure can be provisioned to create a new service that is cloud-based. These applications can be deployed immediately as mobile apps. The infrastructure can be managed in real-time. Power consumption, for instance, can be managed through the control panel. A heat map can show the data center and what needs cooling. 9:26 a.m.: The demo is showing what happens at an airport during a snowstorm and how issues can be predicted to act faster. With cloud computing, the airport can dynamically scale and respond to the problem. The system starts to automatically re-allocate services. You can see the passenger problems and the capacity that is needed. Work loads can be moved to different servers. The application, in the process, gets supported. 9:31 a.m.: Analytics can tell a story that extracts patterns. For example, the demo shows memory usage is high. They can also show there has been an update to the application. The correlation shows that the app needs to be reverted to a prior version so there is no issues for the user. Great demo!9:34 a.m.: You can see the virtual server backup and restore capabilities in the control panel. Files are restored as they are requested. They are showing an attempted security breach by adding malicious code to the passenger portal. The attacks are immediately detected. The control panel gives a profile and removes the hacker form the wifi network.9:38 a.m.: Control panel shows a map with the snow plows and other vehicles on the runways. This data can be used to better show how to respond to the storm.9:39 a.m.: The airport is a complex operation with thousands of moving parts so to speak. The virtualization of a data center provides power but there is an abstraction on the storage. 9:42 a.m.: Tivoli is announcing a new virtualization management strategy. Tivoliis announcing a cloud management system for companies wishing to connect data centers to the cloud. Images can be moved to the cloud. Storage is becoming a service. But what about security? In the context of the airport, the system allows for the management of thousands of devices, all connected within the network where all the assets can be seen. The airport facilities and the data centers are interconnected. This means that the luggage trucks and all the other assets can be seen.9:50 a.m. Tivoii is also announcing Service Management Connect, a community network. 9:52 a.m: IBM provides the back end system for GoGo, the inflight Wi-Fi network. Love that service. 10:01a.m.: Finishing up the morning keynote. We’ll be back in a bit.12:51 p.m.: Listening to Tom Cross, a threat intelligence manager for IBM. The topic is mobile security. Vulnerabilities that are reported have gone way up this year. These vulnerabilities also affect desktop environments. Exploits of these vulnerabilities are way up, too. A number of exploits are due to the users interest in jail breaking their device. Those jailbreaks can be used to create new exploits. That’s a trend.1 p.m.: A few points:Vulnerabilities and attacks exist but exploitation is not prevalent.IT sees the threat as the data that can be stored on the device.Security concerns are also about the devices and how people use them for personal purposes.Enterprises have to set policies for how data is managed on the tablet or the smartphone.1:08 p.m.: 5 Tips for Enterprise Smartphone ManagementContain smartphone VPN accessControl the installation of third party applicationsEstablish a password lock policyEstablish procedures for employees to follow in case of lost or stolen phone.Evaluate the smartphone for anti-virus solutions.1:29 p.m. IBM executives now here to discuss cloud computing. Ric Telford of IBM says the cloud is what you need for the industrialization of IT. For years, IT has been a craft. But that does not scale. Very simple analogies for cloud. They keep trying to compare it to the move to bank ATMs and other examples. What has really changed? The network is getting flat. We’re not hearing that here. Telford takes more of a business approach, saying the clouds of the future will be industry specific.1:40 p.m.: Dennis Quan of IBM is discussing Tivoli Manager product for creating automated workflows. It is designed to work on multiple hypervisors, including Xen, KVM and VMware.1:40 p.m. Announcing Tivoli Storage Manager for virtual environments. It is for making it possible to do backups on virtual machines. 2:01 p.m.: Lockheed Martin’s Melvin Greer is talking about the context for cloud computing. He is pointing to the U.S. federal budget deficit which is now about $1.6 trillion. Considering that, cloud computing is considered appealing. Geer says IT is not going away. He sees federal government taking a hybrid approach. But the impediments to cloud computing are considerable. Security and privacy are considerable concerns. What data can be shared? Using IoT to help farmers to protect livestock from fires

first_imgTags:#farms#Internet of Things#IoT#Nare IoT Labs#South Korea Related Posts An increasing number of farm fires are being caused by electrical arc faults, a high-power discharge of electricity between two or more conductors. Nare IoT Labs, a South Korean startup, has developed a cost effective solution to prevent and warn farmers of any faults, before the fire starts. The system, called “Prevention System for Electrical Arc Fires,” is bundled into a small Internet of Things (IoT) module that can recognize the difference between a harmless arc and a dangerous one that could spiral into a fire.See Also: How Honeywell and the post office are making Christmas brightWith that knowledge, Nare IoT is able to send warnings to a farmer’s smartphone and let the farmer turn off a power grid near the electrical arc to avoid further damage. Inside the module is an alarm, which goes off when a dangerous electrical arc happens.“The rise Internet of Things was an opportunity for us. Affordable modules and network fees allow vendors like us to create more sophisticated systems cheaply,” said CEO Choi Seoung Wook, the founder of Nare IoT Labs.Started with farm security camerasChoi has previously built security cameras for farmers to spot robbers and report them to the police, a crime that was become more commonplace in South Korea. The startup sells a bundle for farmers to receive the complete security package, but Nare’s technology can also be bought al-a-carte if farmers only want a certain module.Nare IoT is only available in South Korea at the moment, though there are plans to bring it to Japan as an OEM. Choi said to ZDNet that he plans to export the system to European and Asian markets, albeit with different marketing and sales practices. This is another example of IoT providing meaningful solutions to customers that do not have large budgets. Wasserstein Smart Wi-Fi Plug: A Plug and Play Solution

first_imgWe all seem to have more devices than ever, which means we now need an effective way to manage them. That’s exactly what the  Wasserstein Smart Wi-Fi Plug intends to give you.A group of Amazon resellers founded the smart home company behind the plug. Wasserstein also makes other quality connected products like security camera mounts as well as offers a wide range of different smart home brands as part of their smart home store.Recently, I tried the Wi-Fi plug to see how it could help us control all of our devices from anywhere with its free app for Android or iOS. Here’s my review. What the Wasserstein Smart Wi-Fi Plug DoesLeaving the house no longer has to fill you with worry about what you might have inadvertently left on. Thanks to an intuitive app, you’ll be able to remotely turn off the electricity supply to any device in your house. The app means that you can remotely turn it on.The app also allows you to name the devices as well as create automatic weekday schedules to turn those devices on and off, including time limits for each device. Timelimits is an ideal way to make your home look lived in even if you are away on vacation. It is compatible with Alexa. If you use an Amazon Echo or an Amazon Dot, you can download the necessary Alexa skills also to use this smart plug. It’s called the”Tuya Smart” skill, and you’ll need to enable it to launch voice control via Alexa. Once you name the smart plug, then you can tell Alexa to control certain things, such as “Alex, turn off the kitchen light.”The smart plug works for consumers and their devices in the U.S., UK, and Europe.Getting StartedTo use the Wasserstein Smart Wi-Fi Plug, all I had to do was download the Wstein app and put the socket plug into a wall outlet. The app instructions prompted me to “Add Device.”  There are three tabs at the bottom of the app that say Devices, Add Device and Profile. The Device tab lists all the Wasserstein devices. This where you will find the controls to turn them on and off. The Add Device tab links up a new connected device. For the Wasserstein Smart Plug, you will need to push the button on the side of the plug before connecting it to your router. Connecting it to your router should pair it with your router system for convenience. Finally, the Profile tab is where you can go if you need to send feedback to the company related to any issues you have with set-up or use. I tried it just to see how fast I might get an answer, and they were surprisingly quick in terms of response time. The Profile tab is also where you can add users that you want to have access to the smart plug. The Best FeaturesThere is no hub or subscription service that you’ll have to buy as extras when you purchase a Wasserstein Smart Wi-Fi Plug. It’s easy to get started within minutes thanks to the plug-and-play format for the socket and the downloadable app. The smart plug is very reasonably priced, considering how much convenience and control it offers. What I liked best about this smart Wi-Fi plug compared to other available smart plugs is its USB charging port. While newer homes may have a plethora of wall outlets, some places fall short. Therefore, the USB port is a definite plus in terms of the value added by using this smart plug. The company’s three-month warranty allows you to return the product for a replacement or a full refund for any reason. Some IssuesWhile I was able to connect with my smartphone, others have reported issues with their Windows phones because these phones and their operating systems are not compatible with the smart plug app.It also doesn’t integrate with other Wi-Fi connected hubs outside of Alexa. That means if you have Google Home, Wink, or Apple Home Kit, for example, this smart plug won’t work because it’s not compatible. There are also limited mobile app features. For example, the mobile app doesn’t let you build automated tasks like opening the door automatically when someone comes home. Some tasks you won’t want to be automatic — relating to the fact that these smart plugs don’t work with some connected hubs — and we’re glad.Where to BuyThe smart plug is available on the Wasserstein website or through Amazon. The best price when I bought it was on the Wasserstein site. What’s IncludedWhen my smart plug arrived, I received one Wasserstein smart plug, a manual with instructions on how to access the app in the iTunes store or Google Play store, and how to use the plug, and a three-month warranty.Overall ConclusionsThe Wasserstein Smart Wi-Fi plug is a quality, affordable connected device that is ideal for someone who has an Amazon Echo or Echo Dot and is just starting to add and use simple, smart home devices. It’s perfect for apartments, dorm rooms, and vacation rental properties.   Brad AndersonEditor In Chief at ReadWrite Brad is the editor overseeing contributed content at ReadWrite.com. Metabones latest Speedbooster opens a world of possibilities for those with Canon lenses. At the beginning of the digital filmmaking craze, shooting with a DSLR was a no brainer, especially if you used a camera like a Canon Mark ii. DSLRs offered incredible dynamic range, shallow depth of field, and amazing interchangeable lenses…a major leap in camera technology. But with more cameras hitting the market there are many non-DSLR options out there for the indie-filmmaker.The Blackmagic 2.5K cinema camera and the mirrorless Panasonic GH4 are attracting a significant filmmaker user base. Both of these cameras offer high-resolution,  incredible dynamic range, and the ability to shoot RAW footage. But if you were one of the early adopters of DSLRs for filmmaking you probably have a collection of Canon EF lenses that don’t fit the Micro Four Third lens mount on these Blackmagic and Panasonic cameras. So your options have been limited…until now.Metabones, the popular speedbooster and adapter company, have created a Canon EF to Micro Four Thirds Speedbooster that allows users to attach Canon lenses to any cameras that have a Micro Four Thirds mount. This comes a few months after the release of the Canon EF to MFT mount that was created exclusively for the Blackmagic Pocket Camera. Hertz acquires Ace joins with Apollo

first_imgIn a move signalling its expansion into the Australian and New Zealand market, Hertz today announced the acquisition of budget car rental company Ace Rental Cars and an alliance with Apollo Motorhome Holidays. At a press conference in Sydney, visiting Hertz International president Michel Taride said the two ventures were steps in Hertz’s plans to diversify the company’s brand and product offerings.Despite continuing with its core business, Mr Taride said, “we recognise also that we need to continue refining and developing our product offerings in order to meet the changing requirements of our customers, and to position ourselves for emerging opportunities.”Mr Taride said he was surprised to learn that almost half of the car rental market in New Zealand was in the “second tier” segment and that the aim of the Ace acquisition was to “try to grow the brand further” in Australia and across the Tasman.   “Even in a downturn, people still want to travel and we want to be part of the low cost offerings without diluting the product.”“Companies with a long history like ours have to adapt.”Seeing the growing popularity of campervan and motorhome holidays, Hertz has partnered with the largest privately-owned operator of recreational vehicles in the world, Apollo Motorhome Holidays.According to Mr Taride, the commercial alliance with Apollo will allow Hertz to enter the Australian motorhome market quickly with a ready-made product range. Effective 1 April 2011, motorhome customers will be able to book Apollo vehicles through Hertz websites in Australia and New Zealand or via the Hertz telephone reservations network.Hertz recently acquired Melbourne-based car sharing company Flexicar and partnered with Australia’s Virgin Blue Airlines group and Middle Eastern Etihad. “[These acquisitions and partnerships] are all strategic decisions designed to ensure that we have the travel products and relationships that our customers expect in various market segments,” Mr Taride said.Hertz estimates the value of the Australian rental car market at AUD1.5 billion, a large portion of which Hertz shares in.
