Arron Afflalo just might be the key to ending UCLA’s eight-year drought at the McKale Center tonight. The Bruins haven’t beaten Arizona in Tucson, Ariz. since Feb. 13, 1997, but if Afflalo can slow down Wildcats senior guard Hassan Adams, UCLA stands a chance. “It will be one of my toughest tests of the year,” Afflalo said. “He’s a fiery guy who’s strong. He’s a competitor.” Adams – who played at Westchester High – is averaging 20.8 points per game and 28.5 for Arizona (9-3, 2-0) in the Pac-10. He just seems to get better and better. He scored 25 points and added eight rebounds, four assists and three steals against Washington State. He followed with a career-high 32 points at 10th-ranked Washington in Arizona’s 96-95 double overtime win. Afflalo might not get that rest after all, but his best offense will be his defense. “Of course, nothing’s changed in that aspect,” Afflalo said. “I’ve been doing that since I’ve been here.” Jill Painter, (818) 713-3615 [email protected] 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. With a road sweep to start the season, Arizona already is in solid position for the conference title. Afflalo, a Centennial of Compton product, knows Adams and knows what makes him tick. “Athleticism and heart,” Afflalo said. “He plays to win all the time. Any time you get a guy like that, you have to focus on him for 40 minutes. And it’s not just me. It’s going to be the entire team.” The Bruins don’t exactly have an entire team since they’re besieged by injuries. Sophomore guard Jordan Farmar has injured his right ankle three times this season and was held to 2-for-11 shooting and six points in 36 minutes in the loss to Cal on Saturday. He didn’t practice all week and will be a game-time decision for today’s game. Afflalo played 39 minutes against the Bears, but UCLA coach Ben Howland reflected and figured he should have used reserves Michael Roll and Janou Rubin more. Rubin, however, had a 103-degree temperature Wednesday and didn’t make the trip.
