By Taylor Heyman The squad has 14 players with World Cup experience and many of those without were involved with Ireland’s Six Nations victories in 2014 and 15.Over half the squad named today – six backs and ten forwards – are currently playing together at provincial level at Leinster.  The others are from a spread of Ireland’s top provincial clubs.ForwardsJoe Schmidt has taken a gamble on loosehead prop Cian Healy making a return to full match fitness following neck surgery.Mike Ross and Jack McGrath match experience with the younger Nathan White’s two caps and the selection of one-cap Tadhg Furlong to complete the prop offering. This has left Mike Bent, who plays both tighthead and loosehead, excluded. The Irish hookers are Rory Best, Sean Cronin and Richardt Strauss, who have a total of 138 caps between them.International experience: veteran Rory Best is one of three solid choices for Ireland at hookerIain Henderson, Captain Paul O’Connell, Donnacha Ryan and Devin Toner will fill the second-row slots.A formidable Irish back row will feature Jamie Heaslip, Chris Henry, Jordi Murphy, Sean O’Brien and Peter O’Mahony.BacksThe Irish backs selection is characterised by utility players.Keith Earls and Luke Fitzgerald can cover anywhere in the back three as well as the centres and Madigan could cover the missing third scrum-half position.Conor Murray and Eoin Reddan are the two scrum-halves named, the absence of Isaac Boss making room for an extra centre.Paddy Jackson, Ian Madigan and Johnny Sexton are the chosen fly-halves for the tournament. Photo story: Brahmaputra is now dumping more and more silt, making farmlands infertile

first_imgCrossing a full Brahmaputra from Dibrugarh to Dhemaji North Bank in Assam by ferry takes an hour, but now requires more than double that time as the river takes a meandering path and is heavily silted. People still prefer the ferry because the land route is more than 400 km long. They are waiting for the Bogibeel bridge, which will cut short the travel time to just half an hour. Also read: Understanding the Brahmaputra and the annual flooding in AssamThe Brahmaputra and its tributaries are known for changing course ever so often, leaving behind a heavily silted river bed. People have adapted to this behaviour of the rivers. They grow paddy and vegetables along their banks when the flood waters recede and move home when the rivers change course. But in recent years, hydroelectric projects built upstream in Arunachal Pradesh have added to the amount of siltation.Deforestation has not helped either. Neither has the unusually heavy rainfall influenced by climate change resulting in all the tributaries dumping silt. Downstream from Dhemaji, Lakhimpur district has witnessed some serious flooding and siltation. During the monsoon, the Ranganadi hydroelectric dam in Arunachal Pradesh releases large volumes of water from the dam site, inundating large tracts of agricultural land in Lakhimpur. And once the flood waters recede, much of the land is covered by sand rendering it useless for cultivation. It is in middle Assam that the Brahmaputra dumps the most silt. Here, Morigaon district is severely affected by floods with the river bisecting it. At places, the the river is more than three km wide. Because of siltation, the river is divided into several parts. People now wade through this part of the river, unthinkable in the past years.last_img read more

India beat Sri Lanka by 39 runs in one-off T20 match

first_imgVirat Kohli’s fine half-century and Irfan Pathan’s opening spell helped India beat Sri Lanka by 39 runs in the one-off Twenty20 International played in Pallekele on Tuesday.Riding on Kohli’s well-crafted 68, the Indians managed to put up a respectable 155 for three. In reply, Sri Lanka were bundled out for 116 in 18 overs, largely due to Pathan (3/27) and career-best effort of four for 19 by Ashok Dinda.Pathan bowled a fine opening spell as he dismissed Tillekaratne Dilshan (0), Upul Tharanga (5) and the dangerous Mahela Jayawardene (26, 5×4) during his first spell of three overs. If Pathan ran through the top-order, Dinda cleaned up the lower order, taking the last three wickets without conceding a run.Aided by condition that helped seamers, Pathan repeatedly swung the ball back into the right handers as he induced Dilshan into playing across the line and getting him castled in the process.Left-hander Tharanga got a ball that swung away from him as he went for a drive only to offer a simple catch to first slip.Jayawardene, who hit Umesh Yadav for four boundaries in an over, got one from Pathan that came back to hit him on the pads. The Lankan skipper wasn’t happy as he felt that the delivery might have been missing the leg-stump.At 35 for three, Lahiru Thirimanne (20) and Angelo Mathews (31) joined hands to add 33 runs before Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed the former who went for an ambitious reverse sweep. At 68 for four, things looked ominous for the islanders.Mathews edged one to Dhoni off Dinda and Jeevan Mendis hit one from Yadav straight to Rahane at covers. At 100 for six, the Lankans could hardly do anything better than wait for the inevitable.advertisementlast_img read more
